This week the lovely Laura Marini from Terra – an earth building organisation that works with kids – came round and we had a fabulous chat about home education (with Julie Bogart’s Brave Writer programme having a star role!) and looking at the plans for Stardust Farm.
I met Laura at the Kinship, the Kinglake Earthship, and have spent two lovely days working with her, making cob and earth plasters and friends. She’s had more than 15 years experience building with earth, for all the right reasons – the horrific carbon and ecological footprint of the conventional building industry; the soulless, one-size-fits-none feel of much urban building; and a love of curves.
So, now my rough plans for the Farm are being given a professional make-over. I’ve so much trust in this – all her nudges were moving me in directions I want to go. She understood why I want my main living area to be a sacred space, and she’s commited to both keeping the ecological footprint low and the spiritual connectedness high.
We didn’t make it up for our regular Thursday session this week – I had a migraine, and there’s still no straw in the local hardware store, but the plan for this coming week is to make a nice big sifter, to spend Sunday moving debris and scything bracken and tea trees, and hopefully buy some straw either from there, or from a bit further afield. And then I’ll share photos of our cob oven as it starts coming together!
PS If you’re interested in running an earth-building birthday party, or school event, or day in the park, email Laura at terrabuildwiththeearth@gmail.com!
