Up on Stardust Farm, we have an abundance of wattle and gum trees. I am planning to build, but finances are slowing everything down, so for now, I have to try and keep the building site clear (while trying to minimise soil erosion!). One of the plants we have in abundance, which I initially thought was a sheoak, is Acacia mucronata. It’s a really useful plant – it colonises open land, it has edible seeds, loved by birds and bees alike. Should be up there in the permaculture lexicon, though I’ve not seen it.
However, from what I can gather, and I admit my research has been cursory, there has been little weaving done with wattle leaves. Having watched a video on weaving baskets with pine needles, I’ve decided to try my hand at weaving with these thin wattle leaves – not as sharp as pine needles and much longer.
I’ll keep this blog updated on how the latest project is going.
In terms of the bath, we’ve had a week of too hot, and today, the start of the cool change, it has been bucketing down – I’ll be back working on that next weekend!
The tutorials I’ve been looking at are indebted to the traditional owners of Turtle Island.
